UK government spends more than €110,000 on Facebook ad promoting benefits of deal
The UK government has spent more than £100,000 (€110,000) on a Facebook advert designed to promote the Brexit deal presented by Prime Minister Theresa May to Parliament.
The deal had been largely expected to be rejected by MPs in a vote that was dramatically postponed yesterday.
In response to a UK parliamentary question, the government confirmed that it spent more than £21,000 (€23,000) making the 60-second advert designed to explain the deal to voters.
The advert was only released on November 30, and within the space of a week the government confirmed that it had spent £90,000 (€99,000) promoting it on Facebook. The ad has also been aired on Twitter.
Separately, Facebook revealed figures yesterday that showed the UK government had spent almost £97,000 (€108,000) promoting the Brexit deal ad between December 2 and December 8, with 11 promotions on the social media platform.
The short advert tells viewers that the Brexit deal will mean “no more sending vast sums of money to the EU, meaning we can spend it on our NHS”.
The advert also extols what the UK government says are the virtues of the deal on issues such as workers’ rights, visa-free travel, education and tackling crime.
